War Hawks seek first ASC win at HSU

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball resumes American Southwest Conference play this weekend, making the short trip to crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University Friday and Saturday.

Friday's single game will begin at 7 p.m., while first pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and video links will be available at mcmurrysports.com.

NOTES:

LAST WEEK: McMurry was swept in its weekend ASC series at Sul Ross State, but bounced back with a 17-13 Tuesday afternoon win at Dallas Christian College.

SLUGFEST: The 17 runs McMurry scored in the win over Dallas Christian are the most since scoring 20 against Howard Payne in 2017. The War Hawks hit three home runs in the game, including a grand slam by third baseman Sam Hillyer.

CHALK GOES DEEP: Left fielder Matthew Chalk hit a pair of home runs versus Dallas Christian. He hit a three-run homer in the second inning and followed it with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. He finished with four hits, three runs and five RBIs.

HEATING UP: In their last six games, second baseman Jordan Speck, Hillyer and Chalk are all batting over .400 with two home runs apiece. Speck leads the trio with a .500 average and eight RBIs, while both HIllyer and Chalk have seven RBIs.

AT THE PLATE: Hillyer and right fielder Mike Gonzales lead the War Hawks in batting average at .347 and .341, respectively. Speck and Gonzales are tied with 15 RBIs, while Chalk leads the team with three home runs.

ON THE MOUND: Right-hander J.T. Barnes continues to lead the War Hawks with a 2.55 ERA and 3-3 record in 35.1 innings. Devin Molina has a 1.93 ERA out of the bullpen in 9.1 innings.

SCOUTING HSU: The Cowboys enter the weekend 8-11, 4-5 ASC after defeating Schreiner on Tuesday. Jacob Rains leads the Cowboys' lineup with a .362 average and is one of four players with double-digit RBIs. Three players have two home runs.
