ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Softball was swept in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader Friday night, falling to visiting Concordia University Texas, 4-0 and 14-4 in six innings.
The teams will conclude the series Saturday at noon at Red Bud Park.
Concordia 4, McMurry 0
Game one served as a pitcher's duel between the Tornados (10-9, 5-6 ASC) and War Hawks (7-12, 2-6 ASC), as both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings.
The Tornados eventually broke through in the sixth inning, scoring four times off starter Hope Schoeneman. Schoenamen allowed six hits with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings in the loss. Emily Levario threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
McMurry tallied five hits in the loss, but left eight runners on base, including runners on second and third in the fifth. The War Hawks had two outs on the base paths, as well.
Concordia 14, McMurry 4
The Tornados scored six runs in both the fifth in six innings to overcome a pair of McMurry home runs in the third inning.
Down 2-0 in the third inning, first baseman Rachel Ripley tied the game at 2-2 with a long home run to centerfield, her sixth of the season. Three batters later, shortstop Reyna Garcia picked up her first career hit, a line drive home run to left to give the War Hawks a 4-2 advantage.
McMurry held the lead through the fourth inning, but Concordia struck for six runs in the fifth to regain the lead and then six more in the sixth inning.
The War Hawks collected five hits once again, with catcher Mikayla Krause and left fielder Kollin Morris crossing the plate on the home runs.
