ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball dropped its series opener at Sul Ross State University Friday evening, falling 9-2 to the Lobos in an American Southwest Conference matchup.
The Lobos (7-9, 3-1 ASC) scored six times in the eighth inning to break open a 3-2 game. Sul Ross took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.
Trailing 2-0 in the fifth after Sul Ross took the lead with two in the third, first baseman Evan Perez tied the game with a two-run double to right center, providing McMurry's only runs of the evening.
The War Hawks (6-12, 0-4 ASC) put two runners on in the second and sixth innings, but were unable to scratch across a run.
Seven War Hawks collected a single hit, with right fielder Mike Gonzales and catcher Blaine McRay crossing the plate on the Perez double.
Starter J.T. Barnes had a quality start on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in six plus innings.
The teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
