Baseball aims to get back on track at Sul Ross

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball goes back on the road this weekend after two straight home series, visiting Sul Ross State Friday and Saturday in American Southwest Conference play. All three games of the series will be played at Kokernot Field.

Game one of the series has been moved up to a 5 p.m. start time with potential cold weather moving in, while Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at mcmurrysports.com.

NOTES

LAST WEEK: McMurry was swept in its conference opening series to LeTourneau University at home, falling 5-2, 8-4, and 8-6.

RALLY TIME: McMurry made late rallies in all three games against the YellowJackets, either having the tying run on base, at bat or on deck in the late innings of each game.

LEADING OFF: Right fielder and leadoff hitter Mike Gonzales leads the War Hawks with a .362 batting average and 15 RBIs. He is also one of six players with a home run.

.300: In addition to Gonzales, catcher Blaine McRay, first baseman Nick Hamel and third baseman Sam Hiller are all hitting above .300 on the season. Hamel and second baseman Jordan Speck are the others with double digit RBIs, as each has driven in 10.

AMONG ASC LEADERS: Gonzales ranks seventh in the ASC in hits (25 and is tied for seventh in RBIs (15). Right hander J.T. Barnes ranks sixth in the ASC in ERA (2.45) and reliever Nick Hamel leads the conference with four saves.

SCOUTING SRSU: The Lobos enter the weekend 6-9, 2-1 ASC after dropping a nonconference series at Hardin-Simmons. Chris York leads a trio of Lobos batting over .300 with a .409 batting average. Tim Johnson is hitting .357 and leads the Lobos with two home runs and 11 RBIs. The third member of the trip, Wesley Moss, is batting .333 with 10 RBIs. Sam Russell leads the Lobos on the mound with a 2-3 record and 3.96 ERA.
