ALPINE, Texas – A jumper in the paint by junior forward Skyler Reyna with two seconds remaining gave McMurry University Women's Basketball an 80-78 win at Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon, propelling the War Hawks into the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
The War Hawks (8-16, 5-10 ASC) trailed for a majority of the first half, and finally broke through to take the lead late in the third quarter. McMurry took their largest lead of the game early in the fourth on a jumper by junior guard Isabel Carrion to put them up 67-60.
McMurry would hold that lead for the next five minutes until the Lobos (5-18, 3-11 ASC) retook the lead at 76-75 with three minutes left. A Carrion layup gave McMurry the lead back before the Lobos tied it one last time at 78 with 30 seconds remaining.
Reyna then gave the War Hawks the win before the buzzer, sending them to the ASC Tournament after Concordia Texas was defeated by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In all, the lead changed 16 times and was tied seven times.
The War Hawks rallied from down 11 in the first half, at 40-29, to within three before a Lobos layup put them up five at the break.
Reyna led all scorers with 24 points and tied her career-high with 19 rebounds – also against Sul Ross last season. She shot 7-of-14 from the field and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Brittany Rodgers scored 14 points, while Savannah Johnson added 11 to give the War Hawks three in double figures. Johnson hauled in seven boards, as well.
McMurry shot 45.8 percent from the floor compared to just 36.9 percent for the Lobos. The War Hawks also held a 42-30 advantage in points in the paint.
With the War Hawks locked into the fourth seed from the West Division, all focus shifts to the second edition of the Crosstown Showdown against Hardin-Simmons February 16. The game will also serve as senior day for the War Hawks.
