Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Buzzer beater rims out as War Hawks fall to Cowgirls

ABILENE, Texas – Trailing by three points with 0.9 seconds remaining, McMurry's London Weilert launched a three-point bid to tie the game from in-front of her team's bench, just beating the buzzer. Unfortunately for the War Hawks, her shot rolled around the unfriendly iron before rimming out and giving Hardin-Simmons the 69-66 victory at Kimbrell Arena on Saturday.

McMurry (8-17, 5-11 ASC) trailed by their largest deficit of the second half, after a Keilee Burke layup gave the Cowgirls (18-7, 11-5 ASC) a 41-30 advantage with 9:07 remaining in the third quarter. Over the next six minutes, the War Hawks outscored HSU 18-6 to take a 48-47 advantage late in the third quarter.

While the War Hawks held an early lead in the fourth, a Cowgirls rally gave them the upper hand and a 67-61 lead when Kaitlyn Ellis canned a jumper in the paint with 2:21 remaining. McMurry would not go quietly, however. Sarah Doherty connected on a three-pointer and Isabel Carrion forced an ensuing turnover and scored on a lay-in to trim the McMurry deficit to one at 67-66 with 1:11 left.

With 29 seconds to play and the HSU clinging to the one point advantage, the War Hawks regained possession of the ball with an opportunity to score the game winner. Skyler Reyna made an interior move, but her shot attempt in traffic was blocked. The Cowgirls' Burke hit a pair of free-throws with under a second to play, setting up the final 69-66 decision. Ellis led HSU with 17 points on the afternoon.

Reyna led the War Hawks with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Weilert added 15 points in her final contest in front of the home crowd. Saturday served as the final home contest for seniors Weilert and Dominique Machuca.

McMurry will return to action on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. when they face UT Dallas in the opening round of the ASC Tournament at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
