ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball returns to Walt Driggers Field this weekend playing a nonconference series against American Southwest Conference foe East Texas Baptist University.
Potential inclement weather Saturday has moved the series up, as the teams will now play a doubleheader Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The single game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats and video links will be available at mcmurrysports.com.
NOTES:
LAST WEEK: McMurry went 1-2 as they visited Southwestern University. The Pirates took game one of the series, 5-3, before the teams split the doubleheader Saturday. McM won the seven-inning game, 8-1, before dropping the finale, 5-2.
ANOTHER SPLIT: The War Hawks have split all three of their doubleheaders this season against Schreiner, Howard Payne and Southwestern.
BARNES SHINES AGAIN: Junior righty J.T. Barnes improved to 3-0 on the year by tossing a complete game in the 8-1 win over Southwestern. In seven innings on the mound, Barnes allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five.
AT THE PLATE: Junior Sam Hillyer leads McMurry with a .325 batting average. Outfielder Mike Gonzales is tops with eight RBIs and second with a .325 average, while four are tied with one home run apiece.
ON THE MOUND: Barnes has an ERA of 1.00 over 18.0 innings pitched, while righty Juan Valadez has a team-high 15 strikouts. Sophomore Nick Hamel is 3-for-3 in save opportunities.
GLOVE WORK: McMurry is tops in the ASC in fielding percentage at .971. The War Hawks have also turned the most double plays with 11.
SCOUTING ETBU: The Tigers have the same record as the War Hawks at 5-5, and are 1-2 in ASC play, having lost two out of three to the University of the Ozarks. Three Tigers are batting over .400, with Seth Mikeska and Casey Combs both hitting for average and driving in a team-high nine runs. Mikeska leads the team with four home runs, while Combs is tops with five stolen bases.
