War Hawks to visit Southwestern for three game set

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball will make a quick stop at Walt Driggers Field this week before heading back on the road for a three game series.

The War Hawks host Dallas Christian College at 2 p.m. Wednesday in a game rescheduled from today, and then visit Southwestern University for a single game Saturday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday. The series was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but has been rescheduled to weather.

NOTES:

LAST WEEK: The War Hawks lost the first game of the series at home to Howard Payne, 6-5, before splitting the final two games at HPU, winning 4-1 in game one and dropping the nightcap, 9-1.

BARNES STELLAR AGAIN: Right-handed pitcher J.T. Barnes threw five innings allowing just one unearned run on five hits in the 4-1 win over HPU. He struck out two, as well. Barnes is now 2-0 on the year with a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings.

THE CLOSER: Nick Hamel got the save once again in the win over HPU, making him 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season. He pitched two scoreless innings striking out four.

ASC RANKS: Among the ASC, McMurry ranks third in opponent batting average (.223), fourth in ERA (3.67), first in saves (3) and third in fielding percentage (.967).

SCOUTING DCC: The Crusaders are 2-12 on the 2019 season. Junior Jacob Patlan leads the team with a .323 batting average, but the Crusaders hit just .208 as a team. Three players have three RBIs while Casey Morrow has the lone home run on the year.

SCOUTING SU: The Pirates took two out of three in their opening series at Sul Ross State. The Pirates scored 28 runs in the series with seniors Colby Schmidt and Kevin Stein each driving in four. Sophomore Hayden Craig leads the Pirates with a .538 batting average, while Byron Dowdell II has the lone Pirate home run.
