ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball turned on the jets in the first quarter and never looked back, picking up a dominant 72-34 win over Schreiner University inside Kimbrell Arena on Friday evening.
McMurry (1-0) went on a 10-1 run within the first three minutes of the contest, sparked by a pair of treys from senior guard Sarah Doherty. The War Hawks then took a 24-6 lead into the quarter break and later led by 21 points at the half.
After a fairly close third quarter with Schreiner (0-1) outscoring McMurry 13-9, the War Hawks blew the cap off with a lopsided fourth quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers 29-8.
For the game, McMurry's defense held Schreiner to just under 12 percent in field goals (6-51), including an 0-14 mark in the opening frame and a 1-16 mark in the final 10:00. Schreiner also went 0-11 from behind the arc.
Doherty and freshman forward Destiny Mathews dropped 12 points each to lead the way. Mathews nearly completed the double-double with a game-high nine rebounds, while fellow freshman post Sidney McHenry added six boards.
As a team, the War Hawks shot 44 percent (28-63) from the field and 33 percent from three-point land (7-21). Doherty and freshman guard Taya Bridges combined for six of the seven triples, while freshman D'Asia White had the other in a nine point effort.
McMurry will look for back-to-back home wins tomorrow as the team welcomes Texas Lutheran to Kimbrell Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m.
