ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball earned back-to-back wins in its season-opening home stand, notching its second victory of the season with a 76-62 triumph over Texas Lutheran on Saturday inside Kimbrell Arena.
Productive post play propelled the War Hawks (2-0) early and often, as senior Skyler Reyna and freshman Destiny Mathews combined for 36 points – nearly half of McMurry's scoring. The pair went 7-15 and 7-13 from the field, respectively.
Both teams shot fairly well from the field, as McMurry finished 29-63 (46 percent) and Texas Lutheran (0-2) shot 22-53 (41.5 percent). The biggest difference came behind the arc, as the War Hawks sank 10 of 24 from three.
Those 10 McM three-pointers came from six different players, including three each from senior guard Sarah Doherty and freshman forward Trinity Meador. Playing just six minutes the night before, Meador made her first impact on the college level with her nine points.
The opening five minutes started even, but McMurry went on a 12-2 run to go from an even 7-7 score to a more commanding 19-9 lead near the quarter break. Two of Meador's three-points basket came on that run, serving as her first collegiate field goals.
The War Hawks led by as many as 14 points before the half, with Reyna scoring 13 of her 20 points in the opening half.
Midway through the third quarter, TLU got within two possessions, but a 10-0 run for McMurry made the lead more comfortable.
Despite a strong effort from the Bulldogs to get back within five in the fourth quarter, the War Hawks once again pulled away, beginning with a Doherty triple just before the final media timeout with 5:16 to got.
Freshman guard Taya Bridges did most of her scoring in that fourth quarter run with seven points in the final five minutes. She finished with nine points for the evening.
With two home wins under their belt, the War Hawks will travel for the first time next Saturday as they face Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska.
