PLAINVIEW, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball came out of the second half strong in their second exhibition game, but were unable to knock off NAIA No. 3 Wayland Baptist University on their home court Friday night, falling to the Pioneers, 85-64.
The War Hawks trailed 39-18 at the break, but that deficit wouldn't last long. McMurry hit five three pointers in the first eight minutes of the half, as it trimmed the once 21-point Pioneer lead down to one at 43-42.
Wayland Baptist once again regained control of the game, but the War Hawks wouldn't go down easy. A three by senior guard Dedrick Berry Jr. pulled McMurry back within five at 61-56. However, the Pioneers responded with a triple of their own and pulled away in the final mintes.
McM matched WBU in the second half, as each team scored 46 points. After shooting just 24 percent in the first half, the War Hawks shot 53.3 percent in the second half, including 58.3 percent from distance.
Junior guard Khalil Butler paced the McM offense with 15 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Berry and junior guard Colin Taylor were each 2-for-2 from three.
Forwards Krishawn Terry and Sherack Malokwu each grabbed a team high five rebounds.
With their exhibition schedule complete, the War Hawks return to Abilene to host their season and home opener November 8 against Schreiner University in Kimbrell Arena.
