ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball couldn't hold on to a 10-point halftime lead in its season opener Friday night, as the War Hawks fell 89-78 to Schreiner University inside Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks led 45-35 at the break, leading by as many as 16 throughout the half. McM made five of its seven three pointers in the first 10 minutes of action, two of which came by freshman guard Shaydon Campbell. McM shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first half.
McM maintained the double digit lead for the first nine minutes of the second half, coming out of the break with an alley oop by senior forward Krishawn Terry from junior guard Colin Taylor. However, the Mountaineers slowly chipped away at the McM lead.
Schreiner tied the contest at 65 with 7:35 remaining, but a layup by Terry and a jumper by senior guard Zacc Carter put the War Hawks back up by four.
The Mountaineers answered with a 10-0 run, halted by a pair of Carter free throws, but would not relinquish the lead back to the War Hawks.
McMurry finished with three players in double figures, as the War Hawks shot 46.2 percent, overall. The War Hawks were 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the opening period, but finished just 11-of-22 on the evening.
The War Hawks capitalized on turnovers, outscoring the Mountaineers 24-16 off the change of possession. McMurry also held a 23-15 advantage in fast break points.
Terry led the War Hawks with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. Freshman Cody LeBlanc added 17 points, going 5-for-5 from the line and connecting on a pair of triples. Carter rounded out McM's trio in double figures with 10 points.
Junior forward Sherack Malokwu snagged eight boards while adding six points. Malokwu was one of four players to score six points.
McMurry continues its opening weekend at home Saturday by hosting Texas Lutheran University for a 6 p.m. tip.
