MARSHALL, Texas – The seventh shutout of the season for McMurry Women's Soccer proved to be a big one, as the War Hawks set a new program record with their ninth win of the season after defeating East Texas Baptist, 3-0 Saturday evening.
McMurry is tied atop the American Southwest Conference with Hardin-Simmons and UT Dallas with seven shutouts. Those three teams have yet to suffer a conference defeat, while the War Hawks and Comets are both unbeaten overall.
The McM defense pitched a shutout in both matches this week, as goalkeepers Jordan Gregory and Cindy Villasana once again combined for the clean sheet. Villasana had three saves in the first half.
Along with anchoring the War Hawk (9-0-4, 4-0 ASC) defense, sophomore midfielder Meriah Sikora notched her first collegiate goal in the 25th minute. After receiving a pass and taking a few dribbles down the right side, Sikora sent a shot toward that net that bounced over the keeper into the front right of the goal.
McM doubled up the Tigers in shots, 21-10, including 10-4 on goal. Seven of the 10 shots in the second half were on goal, and led to two McM scores just minutes apart.
In the 54th minute, junior midfielder Sky Reynolds sliced through the defense and avoided the Tiger (3-7-1, 0-4 ASC) goalkeeper to score the second goal of the game, getting an assist from fellow midfielder Bri Caudle.
Freshman forward Alyssa Daily struck once again in the 57th minute, scoring unassisted for the final tally.
ETBU had the only corner kick opportunity of the game.
McMurry returns home next week for one of its toughest tests of the year, as UT Dallas visits Wilford Moore Stadium for a 5 p.m. kickoff Thursday.
