Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pelaez’s career night not enough at East Texas Baptist, 2-1

MARSHALL, Texas – For the second game in a row, the McMurry University men's soccer team would attempt a late comeback attempt on the road, but would once again fall one goal short in a 2-1 defeat at East Texas Baptist on Saturday night.

The Tigers put 12 shots on goal to pressure McMurry, but freshman goalkeeper Mark Pelaez tallied a career-high nine saves to limit the damage and keep his team in striking distance despite a 2-0 deficit.

An early bad-luck goal and a second half score put the War Hawks behind ETBU by a pair, but junior midfielder DJ Jaime provided a late spark in the 69th minute to cut the deficit in half. From deep outside the box, Jaime launched one into the high right corner for his second goal of the season.

His goal would not be enough, as ETBU held off McMurry's final corner attempts in the last two minutes. With under 10 seconds remaining, the War Hawks saw one final header sail wide right by a foot, clinching the win for ETBU.

The War Hawks fall to .500 both overall and in American Southwest Conference play at 5-5, 2-2. The Tigers improve to 3-7 and an even 2-2 in ASC games.

For the night, ETBU finished with 20 shots, the most faced by Pelaez this season. The McMurry attack took a more strategic and methodical approach with its shots, putting all six of its attempts on frame.

McMurry has now dropped two straight road games by a 2-1 final and will look to get back on track next week at the friendlier confines of Wilford Moore Stadium.

Up next, the War Hawks welcome UT-Dallas to Abilene on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Two days after, McMurry head coach Mike Lambeck will face his former program as the University of the Ozarks comes to town on Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
