ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer team could not overcome a pair of early first half goals by the University of the Southwest, falling by a score of 3-1 in a non-conference match at Wilford Moore Stadium. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 1-2 on the season, while the Mustangs improved to 1-2.
USW out-shot McMurry 14-5 for the match, generating a 10-3 advantage after the first half, alone. The Mustangs tallied goals in the 18th and 22nd minutes to take the quick 2-0 cushion. USW took that margin into the halftime locker room.
A little over 17 minutes into the second stanza, McM cut the deficit in half. Sophomore forward
Calista Flores netted her first goal of 2018, thanks to a perfect header-pass from freshman teammate
Ashland Hansen, beating Mustangs' goalie Melissa Avendano to make it 2-1.
But the War Hawks were not able to make any more headway. USW added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to make it the 3-1 final score.
McMurry's goalkeeping tandem of sophomore
Cindy Villasana and junior
Jordan Gregory – each playing a half – combined for four saves. Villasana had three stops and was charged with a pair of goals. Gregory allowed one penalty kick goal and had one save.
Avendano had one save for the Mustangs.
Sophomore
Sky Reynolds had McM's other shot on-goal.
Cristen Lumbreras,
Kate Holland and
Courtney Kendrick all had shot attempts, as well.
McMurry will try to return to the win column on Saturday morning in another non-conference match-up, hosting Jarvis Christian College. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
