ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer senior forward Cristen Lumbreras scored the game-winning goal in the 45th minute as the War Hawks defeated Jarvis Christian College, 4-1, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Lumbreras took a pass from sophomore midfielder Courtney Kendrick on the right sideline, and then bested the Bulldogs' (1-2-1) goalkeeper from the top right of the box. The goal gave the War Hawks (2-2-0) a 2-1 lead, which they would add to in the second half.
The War Hawks got on the board early after a Bulldog handball in the box. Sophomore midfielder Angelica Navarro drilled the penalty kick past the keeper in just the fifth minute. Jarvis would tie the game in the 38th minute on a penalty kick of their own.
After Lumbreras gave the War Hawks the lead just before the half, McMurry would add to their lead in the 75th minute. Sophomore defender Kaitlyn Roberts received a long pass from freshman defender Kate Holland to get behind the Bulldog defense. After one touch to get around the keeper, Roberts placed the ball in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Sophomore midfielder Brianna Pina rounded out scoring in the 90th minute after collecting a pass from sophomore forward Julia Renfrow.
McMurry outshot the Bulldogs 14-5.
Junior goalkeeper Jordan Gregory got the start in net and allowed one goal, while sophomore Cindy Villasana shut out the Bulldogs in the second half.
It's a quick turnaround for the War Hawks, as they head to Texas Lutheran for a 2 p.m. matchup Sunday.
