ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball picked up its second win of the season over Austin College, sweeping the Kangaroos 25-19, 25-15, 27-25, Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
McMurry was in control from the start, holding the 'Roos (10-9) to a -.036 and -.065 in the first two sets. The War Hawks (15-2), however, hit .211 and .280, respectively. Senior Jasmine Jones had four of her team-high 11 kills in the first set.
The 'Roos led for the majority of the third set, with their largest lead being five multiple times. With the 'Roos leading 16-11, the War Hawks scored six of the next seven points to tie the set at 17. After trading points, the 'Roos had set point at 24-22.
However, a pair of Austin attack errors tied the set, and after the 'Roos took a one-point lead, the War Hawks scored the final three points of the match as sophomore middle blocker Verlyncia Nelson smashed down the match-winning kill.
Jones added 11 digs for a double-double, and sophomore setter Lauryn Davis recorded yet another double-double as well, with 16 assists and 10 digs.
Junior setter Emarie James added 15 assists and eight digs, while senior libero Odalis Rodriguez led the War Hawks with 19 digs.
McMurry totaled 11 blocks on the afternoon, led by junior middle blocker Justice McGowan, who had five assisted blocks and two solo blocks.
The War Hawks continue their four-match homestand Tuesday when they resume conference play by hosting Concordia Texas at 6 p.m.
