ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball bounced back from a two-game losing streak by defeating cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons University, 26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 25-13, Thursday night.
In dominating sets two and four, the War Hawks (14-2, 5-1 ASC) were unstoppable offensively, hitting .321 and .304, respectively. The Cowgirls (10-6, 3-4 ASC) hit just -.049 and .032 in those sets. For the match, McMurry hit .209 compared to just .049 for Hardin-Simmons.
Senior outside hitter Jasmine Jones led the attack, collecting 14 kills on a .370 attacking percentage. Junior right side hitter Jordyn Burnell also had double figure kills with 10, as she totaled a double-double by adding 11 digs.
Trailing 23-21 in the first set, the War Hawks scored five of the final six points, thanks to kills by Jones, Burnell and senior middle blocker Madison Reed.
McMurry trailed 6-1 and 8-2 in the third set, but the War Hawks battled back to tie the set 13-13. The Cowgirls would regain a four-point lead, but the War Hawks rallied again with five straight points and took a 23-22 lead on a service ace by junior middle blocker Justice McGowan. However, the Cowgirls scored the final three points to force a fourth set.
Sophomore setter Lauryn Davis also had a double-double, dishing out 17 assists and collecting 10 digs. Junior setter Emarie James had 16 assists and six digs. Senior libero Odalis Rodriguez led the War Hawks with 16 digs.
Next up for the War Hawks is a rematch against Austin College Saturday at 3 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks defeated the Kangaroos, 3-1, on September 8 as part of the Austin College Invitational.
