ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball's 13-game win streak to begin the season came to an end Saturday at the American Southwest Conference Crossover, as the War Hawks came up just short in upsetting #23 UT-Tyler in five sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 9-15).
The War Hawks (13-1) raced out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set, but the Patriots (10-1) scored the next four points to even the set. It was tied again 8-8, but the Patriots scored the next six points, ultimately winning, 15-9.
McMurry also had a 2-1 lead after three sets and an 18-16 lead late in the fourth set, but the Patriots used a pair of 3-0 runs to take the set and even the match.
After dropping the first set, the War Hawks rallied to take sets two and three. After evening it at a set apiece, the War Hawks hit .379 to the Patriots' .182 in the third to take a set advantage.
In a back-and-forth match, neither team was able to separate themselves from the other. For the match, McMurry hit .192 as UT-Tyler hit .182. McMurry had the advantage at the net, with 10 blocks to Tyler's five.
Junior middle blocker Justice McGowan led the War Hawks offensively, recording 12 kills on a .478 attacking percentage. Freshman middle blocker Elicia Jackson and junior right side hitter Jordyn Burnell each had nine kills, while senior middle blocker Madison Reed added eight.
Defensively, junior setter Emarie James tallied 20 digs, while senior libero Odalis Rodriguez and Burnell had 17 and 10 respectively. James recorded a double-double adding 25 assists.
McGowan also had an impact at the net, racking up two solo blocks and seven assisted blocks.
Sophomore setter Lauryn Davis chipped in 20 assists and seven digs.
The War Hawks return home for a key ASC West Division matchup Tuesday against University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena.
