Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second half rally forces tie with Tigers

BOSSIER CITY, La. – A late second half rally resulted in another tie for McMurry University Men's Soccer, their third of the season, as they played to a 2-2 draw against East Texas Baptist University at the Freedom Fields. The game was moved due to weather.

After senior forward Rafael Lara brought the War Hawks within a goal in the 84th minute on a penalty kick, the War Hawks (2-2-3, 1-1-1 ASC) drew even when freshman midfielder Andres Martinez headed in his first career goal in the 87th minute. Lara now has five goals on the season to lead the War Hawks.

The Tigers (3-3-1, 1-2-1 ASC) got on the board first in the 18th minute on a shot from inside the box. They would add to that lead 10 minutes later on a breakaway and take a 2-0 lead into the half.

McMurry outshot ETBU 5-2 in the overtime periods, but each team finished the game with five shots on goal. McMurry had the only shot on goal in the overtime, and also had a chance in the 88th minute when a shot by midfielder Jesus Sanchez was saved by the Tiger goalkeeper.

The game was also physical, as 21 fouls were called on the War Hawks and 17 on the Tigers. A total of nine yellow cards were issued, five to the War Hawks and four to the Tigers.

Junior goalkeeper Francisco Avilez recorded three saves in net for McMurry.

The War Hawks return home Thursday for a matchup with UT-Tyler at Wilford Moore Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
