Tennis opens 2018-19 at ASC Invitational

ABILENE, Texas -   The Bryan Rainwater era as the head coach for the McMurry University tennis programs got off to a promising start, as both the men's and women's squads turned in good performances at the two-day American Southwest Conference Invitational individual tournament. The tourney was held on the War Hawks' Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center courts, at HSU and at Rose Park.

While no team scores were kept for the tournament, the McM women's team had a total of six individuals and three doubles teams in the finals of their respective flights. Sophomore Gabrielle Ellwanger took first place at the Flight F singles bracket, while the tandem of Claire Huffine and Zayra Gomez won Flight B doubles.

In other singles action, five War Hawks earned second place finishes. Senior Samantha Ritz, freshman Kaitlyn Hathorn and Huffine were the runners-up at Flights A, B and C, respectively.  Gomez was second at Flight E and newcomer Kate Duke lost in the championship final of Flight I.

Another newcomer to the War Hawks, Kylie Long, finished third at Flight H. Kiara Jones and Neah Garza were fourth at Flight G and D, respectively.

Ritz and Hathorn placed second at Flight A doubles, as did Ellwanger and Garza at Flight C doubles. Jones and Long were the runners-up at Flight D doubles.

In the men's competition, juniors Carlos Martinez and Andrew Hallowell won individual flight crowns.  Martinez earned the gold at Flight A, while Hallowell bested the field in Flight I.  Hallowell also teamed up with Cody Aaron to win Flight B doubles.

A trio of War Hawks – Joseph Diaz (Flight D), Aaron (Flight G) and Antonio Pauda (Flight k) – all earned third place finishes in their flights. Chase Daniell was fourth at Flight B, as was Zach Miller at Flight E. Newcomer Dylan Sisouphanh was the consolation bracket winner at Flight J.

In other doubles bouts, Martinez and Daniell were second at Flight A pairs play. Chris Causer and Trey Fambrough were the runners-up at Flight D doubles.
