VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – McMurry University Volleyball capped off a perfect 4-0 opening weekend by sweeping Geneva College before defeating Randolph-Macon College 3-1. This is the second consecutive season the War Hawks have started 4-0.
Game 1 vs Geneva (25-22, 25-15, 25-19)
The War Hawks (3-0) completed their second sweep of the weekend in convincing fashion over the Golden Tornadoes (2-1). Trailing 19-18 in the first set, McMurry rattled off five straight points capped by kills from senior middle blocker

Kianni Mitchell to lead 23-19.
A second kill by Mitchell and a Geneva service error gave the War Hawks the first set and they never looked back. McM went on multiple runs in the second set for the 25-15 win.
In the third set, the War Hawks used a 6-0 run to pull away after trailing 4-3 early. Junior middle blocker
Justice McGowan fueled the run with two kills and a pair of assisted blocks.
Senior outside hitter
Jasmine Jones led the War Hawks with a dozen kills while Mitchell tacked on 11 of her own. Mitchell, McGowan and Jones hit .474, .417 and .375, respectively. Balance was once again key offensively, as six players recorded five or more kills.
McM was strong defensively, holding the Golden Tornadoes to just a .096 hitting percentage. Three War Hawks recorded double digit digs, with 18 coming from senior libero

Game 2 vs Randolph-Macon (25-16, 16-25, 25-15, 25-20)
McMurry was up to the challenge when facing their toughest test of the weekend in 2017 NCAA III Tournament qualifier Randolph-Macon. Even after the first two sets, the War Hawks took control in the third set and finished off the Yellow Jackets in the fourth.
The War Hawks held R-MC to just .024 in the first set while racing out to a 25-16 win. McM used 6-0 and 5-0 runs in the frame to pull away. In the first run, Reed had a pair of kills and Rodriguez two aces as the War Hawks built an 8-3 advantage. McMurry extended the lead to 16-7 during the second run, fueled by a pair of kills by Jones and a pair of aces by junior right side hitter
Jordyn Burnell.
After being held to just a .067 hitting percentage in the second set while the Yellow Jackets hit .343, the War Hawks returned the favor holding R-MC to -.051 in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage.
McM used another 5-0 run in the fourth set to take an early 8-2 lead and cruised to the 25-20 set win to take the match from the Yellow Jackets. Randolph-Macon got as close as 20-18, but the War Hawks scored four straight points to put the game out of reach.
Mitchell led the War Hawks with 10 kills, while Burnell and Jones each chipped in eight. Reed added six kills while hitting .462.
Davis had a double-double with 11 digs and 13 assists to go along with four kills. Rodriguez and Burnell had 20 and 18 digs, respectively.
McMurry returns to action September 7-8 in the Austin College Invitational where they will take on LeTourneau University, Paul Quinn College, Linfield College and Austin College.
