Men's Soccer looks to build on 2017 success

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Soccer looks to pick up where it left off last year after a fourth-place finish in the American Southwest Conference. The War Hawks are looking to return to the ASC tournament for the first time since 2004.

McMurry begins nonconference play Friday at Austin College at 8 p.m. before their home opener Sunday at 7 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium as they host Florida National University.

NOTES:

Last Season: McMury finished 8-6-3, 5-3-3 ASC in 2017. This placed the War Hawks fourth in the conference, but they were ineligible due to the university transitioning back to NCAA III.

Pre-season Poll: The War Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the ASC, the highest prediction for the War Hawks since 2004. McM received 194 points in the poll.

Players to Watch: Making the ASC pre-season "Watch List" for the War Hawks are senior defender Josh Erwin, senior forward Rafael Lara and sophomore midfielder Jordan Sczech. Erwin has played in every game as a War Hawk, and scored two goals while earning second team All-ASC a season ago. Lara was also an All-ASC second team honoree, scoring four goals to go with three assists. Sczech is the reigning ASC co-Freshman of the Year after scoring six goals to lead the War Hawks in his first year on campus.

About Austin College: The Kangaroos finished last season 8-7-5, 6-5-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The 'Roos season ended in the semifinals of the SCAC tournament. The all-time series between the War Hawks and Kangaroos is tied at 4-4.

About Florida National: This is the first ever meeting between the War Hawks and Conquistadors. The Conquistadors are 2-1 on the season as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Head Coach Tyler Tarango: Tyler Tarango begins his third season as head coach of the War Hawks. He has a career record of 11-16-6, winning eight games in year two after just three his first season.
