Johnson Dominates HSU in Series-Opening Win, 5-1

ABILENE, Texas - Senior left-handed pitcher Rody Johnson – pitching in what was likely his final outing in the Maroon and White – hurled a gem in a 5-1 complete game victory over crosstown foe Hardin-Simmons University at Walt Driggers Field. The win over the Cowboys (13-23, 10-12 ASC) was the second-consecutive game that a War Hawks' (13-23, 7-15 ASC) pitcher has gone the distance in a nine-inning game for the victory.

After teammate Tyler Jenkins spun a masterful win over No. 1-ranked Trinity University last Tuesday, Johnson was equally in command versus HSU. Johnson (3-1) scattered six hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter. He retired the Cowboys in order three times and only one batter even got into scoring position, scoring in the top of the seventh.

The War Hawks gave Johnson all the runs he would need in the very first inning. After a double by Jordan Speck and a two-out single by Chris Baker put runners on the corners, Jenkins delivered a two RBI double to right-centerfield. Speck and Baker crossed the plate to make it 2-0.

McMurry added three more runs in the fifth. Noah Clarkson drew a leadoff walk and took second on Mike Gonzales' single to center. With one out, Matthew Chalk walked to load the bases. All the runners advanced on a wild pitch with Baker at the plate, making it 3-0. RBI singles from Baker and Nick Hamel would up that margin to 5-0 by inning's end.

Jenkins, Baker and Speck all went 2-for-4, collecting six of their team's 10 hits. Jenkins had the two RBI, while Baker drove in a run and scored twice. Speck had a pair of doubles to account for his hits, also scoring a run. Gonzales was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The two teams will close out the regular season on Saturday. The doubleheader at Driggers Field begins at 1 p.m.
