War Hawks Lose Twice at Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University softball lost both ends of its American Southwest Conference doubleheaders to Sul Ross State University at Lady Lobo Field.  The War Hawks (4-15, 2-10 ASC) were defeated by the Lobos (12-8, 9-5 ASC) by scores of 7-2 and 15-4.

In game one, SRSU put up all the runs it would need with a four-spot in the bottom of the first, forcing McM to play catch-up. The War Hawks got one back in the second after an infield  Summer Quiroga led off with single and scored on a passed ball with Adrienne Nairn at the plate, 4-1.

The Lobos made it 5-1 in the bottom of the second.  But McMurry plated their second run of the game in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Ashley McClellan laced a triple to left and eventually came in on a throwing error. SRSU added single runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Cheyenne West went the distance for McM. She struck out one and walked one.

In game two, McMurry was cruising along with a 4-2 lead after 3 ½ innings. Avery McDaniel had an RBI single in the first to make it 1-0. Then, in the second, Quiroga's sacrifice bunt allowed McClellan – who had led off with a single – to score from third. McDaniel then slappd an RBI single to left, plating Sarah Nagy, 3-0.

The Lobos scored twice in their half of the third. In the top of the fourth, Megyn Castillo reached on a throwing error, advancing all the way to second. McClellan sacrificed her over to third and Castillo came in on Nagy's ground out to second.

Meanwhile, McM pitcher Kamwren Jackson allowed six hits through three innings and had given up just two runs. But the bottom fell out in the bottom of the fourth. Jackson retired just one batter of the eleven she faced in the inning, giving up 10 runs.  West came on in relief and gave up four-straight its – and three more runs before retiring the side.

McDaniel was 2-for-3 with the two RBI in game two. She was 1-for-3 in the first game, as well.

The two teams will play a single game on Saturday to close out the three-game series.
