ALPINE, Texas – A tough battle by the McMurry University softball team went down the drain in the final at-bats by Sul Ross State University, in a 3-1 walk-off loss at Lady Lobo Field.
The heartbreaker loss left the War Hawks with a record of 4-16 overall and 1-11 in the American Southwest Conference. SRSU (13-8, 10-5 ASC) swept the three-game weekend series from McM.
The two teams were embroiled in 1-1 ball game and it looked like the teams may be headed to extra innings, as the host Lobos had a runner at first with two out. But SRSU rightfielder Darrian Doberlein would take McM pitcher
Kamwren Jackson deep for a walk-off, two-run homer, 3-1.
It was the only time that the Lobos were able to get to Jackson in her four innings of relief work. Jackson entered the game in the third with the bases loaded and two out, inducing a fly out to end the threat. She replaced
Cheyenne West, who had a good outing herself, allowing just a run in the third before Jackson took over in the circle.
The War Hawks actually led first in the game. After the first four McM batters were retired,
Avery McDaniel singled through the left side and was advanced to second on a ground out. With two down,
Adrienne Nairn hit a ball to short, but a throwing error left Nairn safe and allowed McDaniel to score the go-ahead run.
McDaniel also had a single in the seventh, giving her two of the War Hawks' three hits in the game. Catcher
Lexi De La Cruz had a single in the second inning, as well.
