War Hawks Lose Twice at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas -  McMurry University softball took to the road for a non-conference doubleheader at Schreiner University and suffered 9-1 losses in both ends of the twinbill.  The War Hawks fell to 2-8 overall, while the Mountaineers improved to 5-2-1.

In game one, McM found itself down 5-0 after five full innings. In the top of the sixth, the War Hawks got off the deck and on the scoreboard, thanks to a solo home run by Lexi De La Cruz to leadoff the frame.

Schreiner dashed any hopes for a McMurry comeback bid by plating four runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the hosts the margin for the eight-run rule that ended the contest.

McM had three hits in all.  Sarah Nagy and Summer Quiroga each laced singles, to go along with De La Cruz's roundtripper.

Cheyenne West (0-4) went four innings for the War Hawks in the circle. She gave up six of SU's 10 hits, as well as three earned runs. Crystal Peebles was charged with three hits and five earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.  Laura Fuentes finished the game for McMurry and gave up one run, as well.

In the second game, Schreiner once again broke on top early, leading 4-0 after three innings. In the top of the fourth, Ashley McClellan led off with a single and took second on Avery McDaniel's grounder to second. Junior firstbaseman Rachel Ripley then slugged a double to left that plated McClellan to make it 4-1.

But much like game one, the Mountaineers answered with enough runs to once again reach the eight-run margin in the sixth. Schreiner out-hit the War Hawks by a 12-4 margin.

Joining McClellean and Ripley with hits were Kayla Otis with a double and Krysta Winegeart with a single.

McM pitcher Kamwren Jackson (0-2) absorbed the loss in game two. Jackson went 5.0 innings, giving up 11 hits and eight runs (seven earned). She had three strikeouts and one walk.
