AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University softball took to the road and lost an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Concordia University-Texas, 4-0 and 6-0, at Tornados Field. The War Hawks fell to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the ASC, while the Tornados improved to 6-3 and 5-0 in the league.
In the first game, the Tornados posted single runs in the second and fourth innings to take the 2-0 lead. McMurry had its chances to get even in the early going, stranding runners in scoring position in the third and fifth frames. In the top of the third,
Adrienne Nairn led off with a single and eventually moved up to second on a grounder for out number two, but was stranded.
In the fifth,
Krysta Winegeart worked a 3-2 count for a walk to open the inning. She moved up to second on
Summer Quiroga's single and it looked like the War Hawks were in business. But the next two McM batters struck out, with Winegeart and Quiroga executing a double steal to get closer. McMurry's hopes ended when
Megyn Castillo grounded out to third.
The Tornados added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-0. Nairn – who went 2-for-3 in the game – looped a ball third base in the top of the seventh for a two-out single. Pinch runner
Nina Hernandez stole second, but was left there when
Lexi De La Cruz struck out swinging to end the game.
Cheyenne West (0-5) took the loss in the circle for McM. West went the distance and gave up seven hits, but just two earned runs.
In the nightcap, McM was no-hit by CTX pitcher Simone Langland. Conversely, the Tornados collected nine hits and six runs off McMurry hurler
Kamwren Jackson (0-3).
The two teams will play the finale of the three-game series on Saturday (March 3) at 12 p.m.
