McM Swept in ASC Opener

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team lost both ends of its American Southwest Conference opening doubleheader to Sul Ross State University – 11-1 and 7-6 – at Walt Driggers Field.  The War Hawks saw their record dip to 3-5 overall (0-2 ASC), while the Lobos evened their ledger at 6-6 (2-0 ASC).

Before the fans had even settled into their seats it seemed, the visiting SRSU squad put up six runs in its very first at-bats, sending 10 men to the plate against McM starter Jack Poe (1-2). McMurry came back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first after Mike Gonzales singled to center, took second on a ground out and third on Nick Hamel's base hit to  left.

Blaine McRay was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for leftfielder Chris Baker.  Baker then lifted a deep fly out to center for a sacrifice fly that d allowed Gonzales to score, 6-1.  But that would prove to be the sum total of the War Hawks' offense in game one.

The Mountaineers added five more runs off of three subsequent McMurry hurlers on its way to the 11-1 final score.

Gonzales had the only multi-hit game for McM, going 3-for-4, with a double.

In game two, it was the War Hawks who struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first.  An RBI single by Tyler Jenkins drove home Gonzales, who was himself then driven home by McRay's RBI single.  McRay would eventually come home on a wild pitch.

After the Lobos scratched for a run in the third, McM answered in their turn at the plate. With two out, Hamel singled to center and went to second on McRay's walk. Matthew Chalk followed with an RBI single that drove in Hamel and make it 4-1.

McMurry starter Ben Russell got through the fourth unscathed. However, SRSU scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to chase Russell and leave the War Hawks down for the first time in the game, 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Ward drew a one-out walk and went to second on a passed ball. With two out, Payton Stokes singled through the right side and Ward held up at third.

Jenkins then pounded a double down the right field line that drove in Ward and sent Stokes to third. With McRay at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Stokes to come home with the tying run, 6-6.

Neither team was able to add to their run totals until the top of the ninth inning. SRSU's Jonathan Bigley lifted a fly ball to mid-center and Robert White got under the ball, only to have it glance off his glove. When the dust settled, Bigley stood at second base. McM reliever Juan Valadez then struck out Monty Maley for the first out.

Bigley then swiped third base, before Valadez got Jacob Pool on a called third strike.  With Holden Simpson at the plate on a 1-2 count, Bigley then stole home with what would prove to be the winning run.  The War Hawks were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Hamel went 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks. Jenkins was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run, Chalk also went 2-for-5 and drove in one run.  White was 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
