ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball squad could not hold an early lead in its non-conference series rubber game versus Southwestern University, losing by an 11-5 score at Walt Driggers Field. The loss left the War Hawks with a 3-3 overall record, while the Pirates improved to 2-4.
Both teams hit double-digits with the bats. McMurry pounded out 10 hits, with its lone extra-base hit a double by senior shortstop
Noah Clarkson. Conversely, SU amassed 18 total hits, including five doubles.
Leadoff man
Mike Gonzales went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Gonzales also frew a pair of walks.
Matthew Chalk (2-for-5) and
Payton Stokes (2-for-4) each had multiple hits, as well. Both Chalk and Stokes each drove in a run, as well.
After the Pirates tallied once in the top of the first, the War Hawks plated single runs in each the first and second innings.
Nick Hamel had an RBI ground out in the first and Gonzales a sacrifice fly in the second.
In the third, McM got RBI singles from Chalk and Stokes to up its lead to 4-1. However, after that point, the Pirates reeled off eight unanswered runs to salt away the win. Gonzales would chip in another RBI single in the eighth, only to see SU answer with two in the ninth for the 11-5 final score.
