War Hawks Fall to ASC West Leader

BELTON, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball team dropped its second-consecutive game, suffering a 94-77 defeat in a battle versus American Southwest Conference West Division leader University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Mayborn Campus Center. The War Hawks fell to 11-9 overall and 9-4 in the ASC, while the Cru improved to 18-3 and 11-2 in conference.

McM found itself behind the eight ball early, as UMHB led 22-12 after the first quarter and 49-23 at the intermission.  The War Hawks sliced into the deficit in the second half – out-scoring the Cru 54-44 – but the margin proved too much to overcome.

One bright spot for McM was on the glass, where it out-rebounded UMHB, 40-38, including doubling up on the Cru on offensive boards (18-9). The War Hawks converted their offensive rebounds into 23 points on second-chance points.

Sophomore Skyler Reyna led McMurry by scoring a career-high 27 points, thanks to an 11-for-22 night from the field. Reyna also tallied a career game-best four three-point baskets made (4-8).  She also hauled in 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double game of the season and ninth in the past 10 games.

Reyna also extended her string of double-figure scoring games to 14.

Senior Sham Hunter posted another of her patented all-around games. Hunter booked 19 points, grabbed six rebounds, passed off for four assists and had a game-high six steals in 29 minutes of action on the court.

Shabaria Walter and Monica Jones both contributed eight points off the War Hawks' bench. Isabel Carrion and Sarah Doherty each tallied five points, and Dominique Machuca one, to round out McM's scoring.

As a team, McMurry was out-shot by the Cru from the field by a 53-to-39 percent margin.  UMHB shot 20 more free throws than did the War Hawks, converting more makes than McM, as well.

McMurry will next be in action on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Concordia University-Texas, in Austin. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
