Last Second Shot Dooms War Hawks Women, 67-65

AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball overcame a 13-point deficit late in its game at Concordia University-Texas, only to fall on a last-second shot, 67-65, at the Concordia Fieldhouse.  The loss dropped the War Hawks to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in the ASC, while the Tornados improved to 12-10 and 8-6 in league play.

McM trailed from the outset and found itself down 36-23 with 6:30 left in the third quarter. The War Hawks got that margin down to eight points – 42-34 – by the end of the period. McMurry finally overtook the Tornados, 61-60, with just 1:03 left to play on a Sham Hunter layup. After trading baskets, the War Hawks tied the game at 65-65, thanks to a pair of Skyler Reyna free throws with 21 seconds remaining.

Any McM hopes were dashed when CTX got a long-range jumper from Jaela Dejean with two seconds remaining on the fourth quarter clock. A turnover on the inbound pass kept McM from a final desperation shot.

Sophomore transfer Monica Jones led the War Hawks with a McMurry career high 26 points off the bench. Jones was 8-of-18 from the field overall and buried 6-of-9 shots from beyond the arc. She also grabbed eight rebounds.

Junior post player Mackenzie Kimball, also coming off the bench, was the team's only other double-digit scorer with 10 points. Kimball hit an efficient 4-of-6 from the floor, to go along with three rebounds and a block.

In all, 40 of McMurry's points came from head coach Brittany Densman-Roes' bench.  Conversely, CTX had eight points from its reserves.

Sophomores Skyler Reyna and Isabel Carrion each had eight points for McM. Reyna had a game-leading 12 rebounds, along with three steals. Carrion had four rebounds and dished off a game-leading five assists.

The War Hawks did out-rebound the Tornados by a 41-33 margin. Concordia converted McMurry's 15 turnovers into 18 points.
