War Hawks look to return to win column at Belhaven

 
JACKSON, Miss. – The McMurry University football team will play its second-consecutive road game – and first day game – of the 2018 season when it travels to Belhaven University on Saturday (Oct. 6). Kickoff between the War Hawks (1-4, 1-3 ASC) and Blazers (1-3, 1-2 ASC) at the Belhaven Bowl is slated for 12 p.m.
 
McM will be looking or its first road victory in three outings, having previously dropped decisions at Howard Payne (37-31 in 2ot) and Texas Lutheran (65-7) last Saturday. BU is coming off of a 20-19 last minute win at Howard Payne last Saturday.

CROSSING PATHS:  All of the previous games between McM and Belhaven occurred when the Blazers were coached by Hal Mumme, who also served as the War Hawks' coach prior to that (2009-12).
 
WHEN LAST THEY MET:  Then-sophomore quarterback Kevin Hurley Jr. returned to the McMurry University lineup and engineered a second-half comeback, leading his team to a 42-30 Homecoming game win over Belhaven University at Wilford Moore Stadium. Hurley – who had been injured two weeks prior at Sul Ross State - responded in a big way.  Hurley would finish the game with four passing touchdowns and 245 aerial yards.  He completed 11-of-14 passing attempts.
 
ASC RANKINGS:  Kevin Hurley ranks third in the ASC in passing yards per game, averaging 205.8 yards through the air per outing; Spencer Knox is #3 in the ASC in kickoff returns, at 23.9 yards per return in his 14 attempts; McM wide receiver Eriel Dorsey leads the ASC at 111.4 receiving yards per game and is #2 in receptions per game (6.0);  Sophomore linebacker Josh Smith ranks #2 in the ASC for total tackles, at 11.6 per game.
 
MELLOW YELLOW:  McM is the third-least penalized team in the ASC, averaging 50.4 yards in penalties per game. Belhaven ranks No. 5 at 70.5 yards per game.
 
REPEAT AFTER ME: McM sophomore linebacker Josh Smith has a team-leading 58 tackles and has led the team in tackles in every game this season.
 
CHART CLIMBER:  QB Kevin Hurley is ranked #13 on McMurry's career passing list with 2,475 yards. Next up at #12 Isaiah Navarette (1997-2000) at 2,611 yards and #11 Roger Martin (1967, 69-71) 2,691 yards.
 
NEXT UP: McMurry will return home for the first time in three weeks for its Homecoming Game versus Louisiana College next Saturday (Oct. 13) at 1 p.m.
