BELTON, Texas – The McMurry University football team's youthful lineup ran into a buzz saw versus the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division III, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, in an 80-7 loss at Crusader Stadium. The War Hawks fell to 2-6 overall (2-5 in the ASC), while the Crusaders remained a perfect 8-0 (7-0 in the ASC).
McM found the going tough early on, as the Cru bolted out to a 28-7 lead after one quarter and had extended that to 45-7 by the intermission. UMHB tallied 21 and 14 points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The War Hawks rushing game was never able to get on track, as 115 of McM's 130 yards of offense came through the air. Conversely, the high-powered Cru amassed 583 yards of total offense, including 417 rushing yards.
McM quarterback
Kevin Hurley Jr. was 16-of-30 for the 115 aerial yards. With McM down 21-0, Hurley connected with running back
Doyle Hughes on a 22-yard pass for their team's lone touchdown of the day with 5:23 left in the first period. The score was set up by a 52-yard hook-up from Hurley to
Trevion Harris four plays earlier.
McMurry sophomore linebacker
Josh Smith led all tacklers with 11 total stops, eight of the solo variety. Junior defensive back
Reagan Miller chipped in five tackles and a pass break-up.
The War Hawks will look to return to the win column next Saturday (Nov. 3) when they host East Texas Baptist University in the home finale of the 2018 season. The game will also be Senior Day, with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Wilford Moore Stadium.
