McM topped by ETBU in home finale

ABILENE, Texas -  McMurry University did not have an answer for the potent East Texas Baptist University offense, dropping its home finale by a 62-7 score at Wilford Moore Stadium.  The American Southwest Conference loss dropped the War Hawks to 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the ASC, while the Tigers improved to 6-3 and 5-3 in league play.

The loss was McM's third in a row, as ETBU rolled up 793 yards of offense (the War Hawks managed 275 yards for the afternoon). The Tigers pounced out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and led 27-0 at the intermission. East Texas Baptist added 21 points in the third and 14 points in the fourth quarters.

McMurry's lone score of the day came in the third period. Beginning from its own 40, McM's Davian Smith ripped off a 14-yard rush, followed by a 19-yard aerial from Kevin Hurley Jr. to Spencer Knox. McM head coach Lance Hinson then called Smith's number again and the sophomore darted through the Tigers' defense for a 12-yard touchdown jaunt.  Tanner Wright's extra point kick made it 41-7 with 6:13 left in the third.

Smith would finish the day with 47 net rushing yards on eight carries.  He averaged 5.9 yards per carry. Hurley rushed for 33 yards on 11 tries.

Hurley was 18-of-39 for 177 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked three times. Hurley was able to move into the No. 7 spot on the War Hawks' all-time passing yards list, now with 3,468 yards (moving ahead of Lonnie Hobbs, 1972-74).

Knox grabbed five aerials for 91 yards.  Eriel Dorsey had five catches for 46 yards before exiting the game with an ankle injury.

On defense, sophomore linebacker Josh Smith led all tacklers with a career-high 21 stops, 12 solo. Fellow linebacker Xavier Dunn posted 11 tackles and a sack.  Senior Darius Brooks had two sacks and Jalen Gomez one. Kyle Peggram had two pass break-ups.

McMurry football honored its nine seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The group includes: Brooks, A.J. Garcia, Paul Humphrey, Allen Scott, Quinton Thomas, Kristopher Vasquez, Trevion Harris and Doyle Hughes. Eight of these - all except Harris (who transferred after a season at ETBU) - are four-year members of War Hawks Football.
