ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Soccer had their highest scoring output of the season Saturday night, as the War Hawks topped American Southwest Conference foe Howard Payne University 5-2 at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Senior defender Aaron Webb led the War Hawks with two goals, while senior forward Rafael Lara, junior midfielder Javi Mejia and sophomore forward Jordan Sczech each added a single tally.
Webb got the scoring started after scoring on a rebound after his first shot hit the post in the 16th minute. He would record his second goal in the 71st minute the exact same way, after he drilled a shot off the right post and collected his own rebound for the score. That would give the War Hawks a 4-1 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets got their first tally in the 28th minute off a header. But the War Hawks (4-6-3, 3-4-1 ASC) would regain the lead just minutes later on the goal by Mejia. Shooting from the right of the box, the ball slipped through the HPU goalkeeper's hands and into the net. Lara was credited with the assist.
Lara gave the War Hawks and insurance goal in the 62nd minute when Webb sent a cross in from the right side. Lara one-timed it off his right foot into a wide-open net.
Howard Payne added a second goal in the 77th minute off a free kick to make things interesting, but the War Hawks had yet another goal up their sleeves. Lara fed Sczech for a breakaway, and with only the goalie in front of him, Sczech chipped it over his head for McMurry's fifth goal of the night.
Webb nearly had a hat trick in the 75th minute, but the HPU keeper came out to the edge of the box to breakup Webb's breakaway opportunity.
The War Hawks outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-13, with an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. McMurry had six corner kick opportunities to Howard Payne's two.
McMurry travels to Concordia Texas Thursday for a matchup at 7:30 p.m.
