ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's basketball team did not have an answer for the red-hot offense of Concordia University-Texas, coming out on the short end of a 100-73 score at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks fell to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Tornados improved to 11-4 and 5-2 in the ASC.
McM trailed the entire game, as CUTX scored the first seven points of the evening and built a 20-point advantage by midway through the first half. Concordia shot nearly 77 percent from the floor during that run and finished the game by hitting 50 percent of its shots (35-70) from the field. The Tornados made good on 10-of-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc and hit 20-of-25 free throws (80 percent).
Concordia led at the intermission, 57-33.
The War Hawks were also victimized by their own miscues, committing 25 turnovers (15 unforced). CUTX took advantage by converting McMurry's mistakes into 34 points. That – combined with a 40-24 scoring advantage by the Tornados in the paint made for a long night for the War Hawks.
McMurry's bench out-dueled the Tornados' reserves. The War Hawks' reserves accounted for 44 of the squads 73 points, while CUTX bench tallied 24.
Junior guard
Shakur Smith was McM's lone player in double-digit scoring with 12 points. Smith was 4-of-7 from three-point range to account for all of his points off the bench.
Senior stating forward
LaRandall Scroggins narrowly missed a double-double by registering nine points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard
Zacc Carter also had nine points in 16 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Luke Stephenson led a trio of players with seven points. Stephenson also pulled down eight boards. Freshman – and former Abilene Cooper High School player –
Elijah Johnson and sophomore
Mike Williams Jr. each also tallied seven points.
The loss was McM's seventh-consecutive setback. The War Hawks will try to right the ship on Saturday when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor, with tip-off slated for 4 p.m.
