ABILENE, Texas - The youthful McMurry University women's soccer team wasted several early scoring opportunities and, as a consequence, suffered a 1-0 setback versus Austin College at Wilford Moore Stadium. The War Hawks fell to 1-1 on the young 2017 season, while the Kangaroos improved to 1-1 in the non-conference bout.
Other than the scoreboard, the McM ladies dominated the statistics, out-shooting AC by a 13-6 margin and putting three shots on-goal (one in the first half and two in the second). The match was also a stark contrast to the 2016 meeting, which the Kangaroos won 40 and were out-shot by a 35-6 margin (with no attempts on-goal).
McMurry's shot leaders were
Jolyn Noble and
Angelica Navarro, with three tries apiece. Junior
Cristen Lumbreras had two shots. Nobler, Xochilt Miranda and
Emily Fisher had the War Hawks' shots on goal.
In the first half alone, McM had three shots hit either the crossbar or posts.
Sophomore
Jordan Gregory was in goal the first half for McM.
Cindy Villasana took over in the second half. Villasana was charged with AC's goal when Kristi Stevens punched in a shot in the 65th minute for what would prove to be the only goal of the day.
Neither of McMurry's goalies made a save, thanks in large part to the excellent play by defenders
Shelby Wood,
Kaitlyn Roberts,
Karleigh Alsip and
Peyton Wood.
The War Hawks will try to return to the winning track on Wednesday (Sept. 6/1 p.m.), by hosting Huston-Tillotson University at Wilford Moore Stadium.
