CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – McMurry University's women's soccer could not hold a halftime lead, dropping a 2-1 road decision to the University of the Ozarks. The War Hawks (2-7, 0-4 ASC) led 1-0 at the intermission, but gave up a pair of second-half goals to the Eagles (5-4, 1-4 ASC) in the American Southwest Conference contest.
Freshman
Angelica Navarro broke open the scoring with her team-leading third goal of the season at the 8:40 minute mark of the match. Navarro headed in a ball off of a set piece from her former Western Hills High School teammate, freshman
Emily Fisher, to make it 1-0.
It was the third time this season that the duo has combined on a scoring play for the War Hawks.
In the second half, Ozarks' CJ Burns took control for her team, tallying a pair of unassisted goals. In the 54th minute, Burns lofted a free kick from 35 yards out over the head of McM goalkeeper
Cindy Villasana. Villasana took over in the second half after
Jordan Gregory had two saves in blanking the Eagles in the first half. Villasana had two saves in her stint in the net.
Gregory returned to the field in the nets for McM, but was also scored on by Burns in the 72nd minute, lofting a 25-yard shot over the War Hawks' net-minder that made it the 2-1 final score.
Ozarks held an 11-9 advantage of total shots, six on-goal. McM had two of its shots on the nets.
Navarro had two shot attempts, as did teammates
Cristen Lumbreras and
Jolyn Noble. Noble had McMurry's other shot on-goal in the match.
