ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer team took LeTourneau University to double-overtime, before succumbing, 2-1, in the extended segment of the American Southwest Conference match at Wilford Moore Stadium.
The loss was the third, one-goal setback suffered by the War Hawks (2-6, 0-3 ASC) this season.
The YellowJackets (6-2-1, 2-2 ASC) put the first score of the day on the board in the 23rd minute, as LETU's Kelli Sonnier lifted a shot past McM net-minder
Jordan Gregory. Gregory had one save in the first half, as the War Hawks headed into the locker room down by the lone goal.
In the 74th minute, McM freshmen
Angelica Navarro and
Emily Fisher – also former teammates at Western Hills High School – combined to get McMurry even. Navarro, whose nickname is "Jelly", got the War Hawks out of a jam by sliding a perfect pass to Fisher, who then beat the Jacket defenders.
Fisher got LETU goalie Carrye Funk off her line and flicked the ball past her to knot the match at 1-1. The goal was Fisher's first as a War Hawks and the assist was Navarro's team-leading third "help" this season.
The contest remained deadlocked through the rest of regulation and the first ten-minute overtime segment. However, with 2:54 remaining in the second – and final – overtime period, the YellowJackets managed the match-winner off the foot of Sonnier.
McM's
Cindy Villasana – who took over in the nets after halftime – had two saves, but was charged with the goal. Villasana had held LETU at bay for more than 62 minutes.
The YellowJackets out-shot McM by a 16-5 margin as a team. Fisher was the only McMurry player with more than a single shot attempt, putting both of her tries on-goal.
