ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's soccer freshman
Jordan Sczech (Spring Branch, Texas/canyon Lake H.S.) scored a pair of second-half goals to propel his team to a 2-0 home win over East Texas Baptist University, in the team's American Southwest Conference opener at Wilford Moore Stadium. The win improved the War Hawks to 4-2 overall, while the Tigers fell to 2-4-1 on the year and 0-3 in the ASC.
But before Sczech's second segment spark, McM had to endure more than 74 scoreless minutes of doing battle with the ETBU. In the first half, the Tigers out-shot the War Hawks 8-7, with seven shots on goal (to just one by the War Hawks).
But the rejuvenated McMurry side took control from the outset of the second half. McM reeled off 12 unanswered shot attempts in the final stanza, before ETBU finally got off an attempt in the final minute of the match. In the end, it was McMurry holding a 19-9 advantage of shot attempts.
Sczech notched his first goal of the evening at the 74:30 juncture, taking a pass from
Aaron Webb and beating ETBU goalie Bryant Botello to make it 1-0.
Sczech's second goal came at 82:04. A booming punt from McM goalkeeper
Alex Chavez went right to Sczech, who settled the ball and went one-on-one with Botello. Sczech drilled the ball into the far upper corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the year and giving McM some insurance, 2-0.
In addition to earning an assist on Sczech's goal, Chavez had seven saves on the way to his third shutout of the year. Chavez lowered his goals against average to 0.55 through six matches.

James Alexander helped make Chavez's job easier, especially in the team's dominated second half effort.
Rafael Lara had five of McMurry's shot attempts.
Javi Mejia took three tries, with two on-goal.
