Â
CONWAY, Ark. - After a scoreless first half of its season-opening match, the McMurry men's soccer team found its groove in the second stanza and rolled past host Hendrix College, 5-0. The War Hawks (1-0) out-shot the Warriors (0-1) by a 21-5 margin.
Â
Despite blasting 11 shot attempts in the first 45 minutes – seven directly on-goal – McM was unable to find the back of the net. Conversely, the War Hawks' stingy defensive half made things easy for senior goalkeeper
Alex Chavez, who made just one save in each half.
Â
McMurry's big breakthrough came in the 63rd minute, when a Warriors' player was issued a red card at 62:02. Just five seconds later, sophomore
Jesus Sanchez tallied his team's first goal of the season.
Â
Hendrix was slapped with another red card in the 72nd minute, giving the War Hawks a two-man advantage. The Warriors also had four yellow cards to go along with the pair of reds. That opened the flood gates, as McM knocked in four goals in the final eight minutes of the contest.
Â
Freshman
Jordan Sczech had an impressive debut as a War Hawk, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another. Sczech's first collegiate goal came at 82:08 on an assist from
Javi Mejia. Just two minutes later, Sczech returned the favor as he assisted on a Mejia goal that made the score 3-0.
Â
In the 89th minute, junior
Rafael Lara set up Sczech for his second goal of the night. Lara, the War Hawks' scoring leader in 2016, netted his first goal of the season with less than a minute to play, with the assist credited to
Diego Paz.
Â
McMurry will stay in Conway until Sunday afternoon, when it faces Rhodes College in a neutral-site contest. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
