SHERMAN, Texas – The McMurry University volleyball team remained unbeaten in 2017, picking up two more wins on the final day of the Austin College Classic. The War Hawks (4-0) duked it out with Lawrence (Wis.) University in their morning match, winning a 3-2 (29-31, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 15-12) marathon, before sweeping past Paul Quinn College, 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-3), in its finale.
Sophomore
Justice McGowan led the assault against Lawrence University, rolling up a match-leading 17 kills and a .441 attack percentage. McGowan also topped all players with five blocks (three solo).
Three other War Hawks amassed double-figure kill totals, as well.
Jasmine Jones and
Jordyn Burnell both tallied 13 kills, with newcomer
Khristyn Howard posting 10. Howard also had a pair of solo blocks to her credit.
McM's setter duo of
Emarie James and
Lauryn Davis had 29 and 28 assists, respectively. Davis added 18 digs and James 13. Libero
Odalis Rodriguez had 25 digs, and
Madison Reed 18 digs to go along with nine kills. Rodriguez served up a match-leading four aces, as well.
Verlyncia Nelson contributes eight kills and six digs for McM.
McM's veteran head coach
Cammie Petree was able to rest some of her regulars in the blanking of Paul Quinn College to close out tourney action. Burnell registered eight kills and a .700 attack average, with
Jada Cortez and
Baylie Barnes each adding seven kills. Howard had six kills and a .867 attack average, as well.
As a team, the War Hawks hit an impressive .443 attack average for the match.
The War Hawks were deadly on the serve with 17 aces as a team. Cortez and James each had five aces, with Davis chipping in four.
