SHERMAN, Texas - The McMurry University volleyball team won its first two matches at the Austin College Invitational, extending its current win streak to six matches to open the 2017 season. The War Hawks (6-0) knocked off both the University of Dallas and Louisiana College, by 3-0 scores.

It is the most wins to begin a campaign by a McM team since 2011 (which won 17 straight at the outset). It was also the third-consecutive shutout of an opponent by head coach
Cammie Petree's unit, and fourth blanking of a 2017 foe, overall.

McMurry had a tight battle in set one versus the University of Dallas, taking a tough 30-28 win. The War Hawks would finish off UD in sets Nos. 2 and 3 by identical 25-21 scores.

Sophomore
Justice McGowan had a match-high total of 12 kills, as well as leading all players with a .522 attack average, making no errors in 23 attempts. She also had three blocks.

Madison Reed and sophomore right-side hitter
Jordyn Burnell each managed nine kills. Senior
Baylie Barnes had eight kills. Reed also chipped in nine digs.

Odalis Rodriguez – last week's American Southwest Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week – had a match-high 22 digs. Teammate
Jaelyn Green added 16 digs and a pair of service aces.

Against the upstart Louisiana College team – fielding its first-ever volleyball team in 2017 – it was never a question, as the War Hawks swept their way to the 25-11, 25-10, 25-17 win.

Burnell had a big night for McM, leading all players with 14 kills to go along with nine digs.Â
Khristyn Howard had nine kills in 13 attempts, for a blistering .692 attack average. McGowan added seven kills and two blocks.

Lauryn Davis rolled up 41 assists and seven digs. Rodriguez had 16 digs.

The Austin Invitational wraps up on Saturday, with the War Hawks facing Pacific (Ore.) University (11 a.m.) and Occidental (Calif.) College 3 p.m.).
