RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University baseball split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with the No.12-ranked team in the nation for NCAA III, the University of Texas-Dallas, dropping the opener, 8-1, and winning a seven-inning run rule game, 10-0, in the second game. The War Hawks improved to 11-17 (5-7 ASC), while the Comets are 20-5 (9-3 ASC).
In the first game, the McM team was limited to just one hit. However, the War Hawks made the one hit count. The leadoff batter of the game – McM's
Robert White - slapped an inside-the-park home run.
Despite not generating any more offense, McMurry made the run stand up for the first four innings, thanks to War Hawks starter
Jack Poe (3-3) keeping the Comets at bay. But in the fifth, UTD erupted for eight runs (five charged to Poe) to secure the win.
In game two, McMurry senior pitcher
John Eric Cortez had his best outing of the year by throwing the seven-inning complete game shutout at the Comets. Cortez (2-3) scattered five hits and struck out four UTD batters.
McM gave Cortez all the runs he would need in their very first at-bats of the game. Consecutive singles by White,
Randy Crevier and
Tyler Jenkins (with the RBI) made it 2-0. An RBI single later in the frame drove in Jenkins to make it 3-0.
McMurry added three more in the fourth on a three-run homer off the bat of catcher
Blaine McRay. It was McRay's first roundtripper of the year.
The War Hawks kept the pressure on in the fifth and sixth innings, posting a pair of runs in reach. Jenkins scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and
Payton Stokes laced an RBI single. In the sixth, White scored on a wild pitch and Jenkins crossed the plate with the 10th run on a delayed double steal.
McM had 10 hits in all. McRay was 2-for-4, as was White (who also scored twice). Jenkins was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Stokes also went 2-for-3, with a run and RBI.
