Box Score
RICHARDSON, Texas – The McMurry University baseball team mustered just one hit for the first eight innings of its American Southwest Conference game versus the No. 12-ranked University of Texas-Dallas, falling by a 12-1 score in the series opener. The War Hawks fell to 10-16 (4-6 ASC), while the Comets improved to 19-4 overall (8-2 ASC).
UTD jumped on McM ace
Juan Valadez early, chasing the sophomore right-hander after just two-thirds of an inning. Valadez was unable to find any rhythm from the outset, hitting the first batter he faced and then walking the next two to load the bases with none out. The Comets' fourth hitter – Connor Scruggs – then blasted a grand slam home run to left. Valadez walked one more batter, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly, before exiting the contest trailing 5-0.
But Valadez was not alone in feeling the impact of the Comets.
Rody Johnson, who went 2.1 innings in relief of Valadez, was charged with six earned runs and permitted six of UTD's 12 hits on the afternoon.
Four succeeding McM hurlers –
Reese Etter,
Aaron Donald,
Hunter Brooks and
Scott Warner – settled matters down for the visitors. Brooks gave up the only other run of the day. Etter tossed two scoreless frames, while Donald and Warner had one clear inning each.
Meanwhile, UTD junior pitcher Jamie Androit was virtually unhittable as he improved his personal record to 6-0. The War Hawks finally got to Androit in the ninth.
With one out, pinch-hitter
Jerett Bell was hit by a pitch and moved to second on an infield single from
Austin Broce. Bell went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on
Chase Bledsoe's RBI single to right, McM's third hit of the day.
The two teams will close out the three-game series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at UTD Field.
