ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball freshman forward
Skyler Reyna matched her career high scoring with 25 points, to lead her team's 78-67 American Southwest Conference win at Sul Ross State University at the Gallego Center. Reyna paced a quartet of War Hawks (7-14, 3-10 ASC) double-digit scorers, gaining the season split with the Lobos (9-13, 6-7 ASC).
Reyna started off quietly in the first half – with just four points – but poured in 21 second-half points (matching the 25 spot she put on at Arlington Baptist back on Nov. 21). Reyna was an efficient 9-of-17 from the floor and just as productive from the free throw stripe, where she was 7-of-8.
Reyna also rolled up her fifth double-double of the season by pulling down 10 rebounds, as well.
Senior guard
Haley Welch booked 12 points before fouling out early in the fourth period. A pair of the War hawks' talented freshman –
London Weilert and
Rhianna Jones – each contributed 10 points. Welch, Weilert and Jones each had a pair of three-point baskets, as did
Kaymee Howell (6 points). As a team, McM converted 9-of-25 (36 percent) from beyond the arc.
Isabel Carrion and
Sham Hunter each tallied six points, as well. Carrion and Hunter each had a game-high four assists, apiece. Hunter led all rebounders with 11 caroms to her credit.
Unlike the first meeting this season in Abilene – won by the Lobos in overtime – McMurry was well in control of matters for most of the game. SRSU led by one point at the 7:25 juncture of the opening quarter, which would prove to be its only lead of the entire game.
The War Hawks used some deft shooting – hitting 50 percent (9-18) in the first quarter alone – to build a comfortable cushion and force the Lobos to give chase the balance of the game. McM led by as much as 15 points at the 7:59 mark of the third quarter on a Reyna jumper.
Late in the third period and early in the second, Sul Ross made its strongest run at the War Hawks. On three occasions in the fourth quarter, SRSU got to within two points. But McM responded each time, the last of which came with 3:11 left to play, 66-64.
The War Hawks not only withstood that final surge, but immediately scored 10 unanswered points – six of those by Reyna – to effectively ice the game, 76-64, with 33 seconds remaining.
McM's team did a nice job of taking care of the ball, as well. The War Hawks matched their lowest turnover total of the season, 11, while forcing the Lobos into 16 miscues.
