Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry baseball team split its home-opening doubleheader versus NAIA No. 20-ranked Wayland Baptist University at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks (1-2) won the opener, 9-5, but dropped the nightcap to the Pioneers (6-5), 6-3.
Newcomer
Payton Stokes – from Wylie High School – went 2-for-3 on the day. Stokes stroked a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third, finishing with two runs batted in for the game. Three batters later, senior firstbaseman
Chris Baker smashed a two-run roundtripper to put McM ahead, 5-4.
After WBU knotted the game in the top of the fifth, the War Hawks iced the win by answering with four in their half of the frame. A two-run single by junior shortstop
Noah Clarkson provided the difference. McM added two more on a sacrifice fly from
Robert White and an RBI single from Stokes.
Rody Johnson (1-0) pitched the fifth inning, as the third of four McM hurlers, as the benefactor of the War Hawks' four-run rally to earn the win.
In the second game of the day, the Pioneers touched up McM starter
Tyler Jenkins for five runs in 4.2 innings. WBU had six hits, compared to eight by the War Hawks.
Jordan Speck was McMurry's only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4, with an RBI. Clarkson and White each had a double to their credit.
