War Hawks' Comeback Bid Falls Short at ETBU, 64-61

MARSHALL, Texas – A strong fourth quarter surge came up just short for the McMurry University women's basketball team, falling to East Texas Baptist University, 64-61, in a non-conference contest at Ornelas Gym. The War Hawks fell to 1-3 overall, while the Tigers remained perfect this season at 3-0.

ETBU held its largest lead of the game – 52-43 – in the final stanza after its leading scorer, Kim Childress (25 points), converted a layup at the 6:12 juncture and the Tigers still held that same advantage with just under three minutes to play, 58-49.

That's when the War Hawks would begin their 10-1 run at ETBU. Sophomore transfer BreAnn Ford booked a layup. After a Tigers' free throw, Dominique Machuca drained a three-point basket, followed by a pair of free throws and a three-pointer from sophomore Skyler Reyna to knot matters at 59-59 with 2:01 left to play.

Two more charity shots from Reyna tied the game again at 61-61 with 1:23 left in the fourth. But the Tigers made good on three of four free throws down the stretch, while McM was unable to add to its total, for the 64-61 final.

Reyna finished the afternoon with a team-leading 19 points, narrowly missing a double-double after also pulling down nine rebounds. Reyna hit 7-of-15 from the floor and was 4-of-6 from the free throw stripe. She also had two assists and two steals.

Ford had her best outing in her brief McM career, tallying 13 points. Ford hit 4-of-5 from the field and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line in 23 minutes of work.

Sophomore guard Sarah Doherty was the War Hawks' third player in double-figure scoring. Doherty was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc to account for her 12 points. Doherty also had two assists and two steals.

Senior guard Sham Hunter was held to just two points, but more than made up for it in other areas. Hunter had a game-leading 10 rebounds and five assists.
