ALEXANDRIA, La. - The McMurry University women's basketball team handed a red-hot Louisiana College squad just its second loss of the season, scoring a 61-55 American Southwest Conference road victory at the Rapides Parish Coliseum. The War Hawks improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the ASC.
McMurry handed the Wildcats (4-2, 0-1 ASC) their first setback since they lost to No. 23-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College on November 18. And doing so proved to be an epic effort from head coach
Brittany Densman-Roes' team.
The War Hawks and LC battled through nine ties and nine lead changes. Neither team was able to extend any significant advantage, with the War Hawks largest lead being eight points and the Wildcats a five-point cushion.
Trailing by two points with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter, McM took the lead for good on a three-point play by
Isabel Carrion, putting her team ahead, 51-50. Carrion's play sparked a 10-0 run by the War Hawks over the next three minutes, moving on top 58-50 and icing the win for McMurry.
Carrion finished the evening with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carrion was 6-of-10 from the field. She also had game-leading totals of four assists and three steals.
Sophomore forward
Skyler Reyna led all scorers with 17 points, burying 8-of-15 field goals and going 2-for-2 from the free throw stripe. Reyna pulled down eight rebounds and dished off for three assists, as well.
Sarah Doherty finished with eight points and
Monica Jones seven.
Kaymee Howell added six points, thanks to a pair of treys.
McM forced the wildcats into 24 turnovers, converting them into 27 points. The War Hawks held a 34-18 advantage for points in the paint, with both teams tallying eight second-chance points.
